In the News

Sheila Kelley’s S Factor was a hot topic in November - and in two different languages!  On November 15, Telemundo’s Alfilo de la Noticia (The Edge of the News) aired an S Factor segment hosted by the gorgeous Maria Ochoa, who participated in a class with our equally gorgeous, Spanish-speaking instructor Tina Kraishi.   We also have a wonderful article about S Factor that is currently featured on the Spanish-language website RevistaCambio.com.

Sheila was a guest on the Green Stone Media women’s radio network program, The Lisa Birnbach Show, on November 17th.  Listen to the podcast here.

SavvyMiss.com, a web community connecting and informing hip, stylish women everywhere, featured an interview with Sheila on November 13 and will publish a companion article about S Factor on December 13.  Editor Carita Rizzo also wrote a similar article for Finnish-language magazine, Volt, featuring a photo of the amazing and beautiful Anjua Maximo.

S Factor received some great regional attention as well: the Bay area’s Gentry magazine has a terrific piece on their website.  The recent Houston workshop garnered lots of media buzz as well!  Sheila was interviewed by 107.5 K-Hits Radio, ABC’s KTRK-13 news aired a segment all about the 'S', as did KRIV Fox 26.

LA.com, a guide to all that’s hot and happening in Los Angeles, highlighted
S Factor as a hot spot, check it out here.

In addition, we were very excited to have Fox 11 LA’s lovely Lisa Breckenridge pay
S Factor a return visit!  We hope all you LA ladies caught the fabulous interview with Sheila and footage of our amazing teachers that aired on Fox 11’s morning news on December 6th!  To view this great piece, click here. There’s much more news to come in the month of December, including articles on Salon.com, CitySearch.com, and
an S Factor appearance on E! Network’s
Dr. 90210.

The Otis Redding
'Soul Christmas'
and more..

I’ve got two music picks for you this sweet holiday time of year! One to send you deeply into the true soulful spirit of Christmas and the other to help you regroup between parties, shopping, cooking, entertaining and all that comes with the holiday season.

The first is a beautiful rendition of White Christmas by Otis Redding that will touch a place deep inside that makes the profundity of the holidays feel real and warm and grounding.

Now, here I go changing direction on you 180 degrees, with this baby that I know you will all thank me for one day. This 10 minutes of Buddhist Drums, Bells and Chants from World Meditations: Six Meditations from Around the World, is like letting your ears take a hot whirlpool bath. This meditative music will seep into every pore and orifice of your body and suck all the holiday stress, tension and chaos out of your being. There are six meditations on the entire CD, each about 10 minutes long. I love them all, though the Tibetan monastic chanting piece is a little creepy. If you’re making a choice to download or purchase just one, you cannot go wrong with this one.

A Charlie Brown Christmas

A Charlie Brown Christmas is truly one of the most delicious holiday programs ever made. It actually falls in line with one of the fundamental principles of the
S Factor: rediscovery. Here at the ‘S’, we work at rediscovering ourselves and our body; this story is about rediscovering the true meaning of Christmas. When Charlie Brown finds himself overwhelmed by the rampant commercialism surrounding the holiday season, he falls into a depression that prompts good old Lucy to nominate him to direct the school Christmas pageant in an effort to restore his holiday spirit. He accepts the job much to his delight but, when he and Linus bring a sickly-looking tree back to school, the rest of the children burst out into mocking laughter. Feeling forlorn, Charlie leaves with the tree – he identifies with the spindly-looking tree and can see how much it "needs him”. He nearly loses all his faith when he passes Snoopy's doghouse, decked out in Christmas lights, in an effort to win money in a contest. Just when you think all is lost, in true Peanuts style, Linus saves the day when he brings the tree back to life and reminds the entire gang about the true meaning of Christmas. A Charlie Brown Christmas ends with the restoring of faith and a newfound meaning of Christmas for all. Though this short film is nearly 50 years old, its message still rings poignant and true. This endearing little Christmas special is filled with memorable moments that will make you smile no matter how many times you watch it. A Charlie Brown Christmas brings you back to what Christmas is truly about, and it gives you that warm, deliriously wonderful holiday feeling deep in your heart.

The Gift of the Magi
by O. Henry

The Gift of the Magi is a lyrical, exquisite short story about gift giving.  It is the story of Della and Jim, a newlywed couple of limited means who long to give each other the perfect gift for Christmas, one that will truly reflect their immense love and devotion to each other.  But with so little money, how can they manage to show their true feelings for one another? The gifts they select result in one of the most heartwarming and humorous conclusions and provide a very surprising payoff at the end. Filled with poignant twists and characters that are vivid and full of life, this beautiful story is perfect for all ages and reminds us of the true meaning of Christmas and an important, age-old lesson: it is so much better to give than to receive.

To read the story, visit http://www.ibiblio.org/ebooks/ and search for this classic piece written by O. Henry.

Remember to share it with a friend or maybe read it to your sister on the phone.

Oh, my god!  I have 32 Christmas gifts to get this year and it’s already December 1st!  What the hell am I going to do?  Even if I buy one gift a day for the next 25 days, that’s only 24 presents!  I don’t get out that much. I’m screwed.  I’m up a creek without a……lost in a forest with only bread crumbs… between a rock and ……you get my predicament, 'cause you’re probably in it too, right?  Or at least something slightly similar?  I’m going to use my own advice and breathe.  I shall let the great 'S’ of my life guide me.  She’s never let me down yet.  I remember my birthday several years back… in an attempt to throw off the normalcy of it all, I bought gifts for my friends and family.  It just about flummoxed my hub man, flabbergasted my friends and tickled my son to pieces.  I was so happily surprised by how good it felt to be Santa on my own birthday that I am recalling that feeling again today to inspire me through this coming holiday season.  I want to be Santa so I can flummox, flabbergast and tickle all over again.

Look back on this most incredible year. Relish all the wonderful things life has given you. Find the desire inside yourself to give back and turn gift giving into a way to reach out and extend your love and appreciation into someone’s heart. You're probably saying exactly what I said to myself, "What the hell am I going to get everyone and when am I going to get everything?" The first step is to write down your list and then, for whomever you are gifting, think of the reaction you want to elicit from them. For example, to tickle, to touch, to surprise, to warm, to inspire, to make laugh, etc., and allow your inspiration to take it from there. It is such a delicious feeling to give someone a present that you know they will truly, sincerely enjoy and cherish.  There is nothing quite so spectacular as when your friend, child, or lover rips off that wrapping paper and their face lights up with elation and surprise.  You instilled that emotion in them and now it’s time to indulge in the gift of happiness you just provided.  That feeling is undeniably priceless.

The most surefire way to get a gift for a like-minded pal is to think about what you love and what you really want when you go shopping.  That gorgeously soft butternut cashmere scarf that you’ve had your eye on for oh-so-long is probably something your best friend will also really love.  For a man, any man, think about what they surround themselves with in their life and what they love. For example, that plaid, multi-pocketed golf bag (I know, I don’t get it either) that your husband decided was too frivolous… surprise him, take the plunge and get it .  Take time to think about what would truly make your friends and family members feel good about themselves.  If finances are tight or you simply want to change it up and be different, offer them your time… babysitting, gardening (plant them a special tree or bush that will remind them of you), cooking, a foot massage, car wash… whatever it is that will lift their spirits and give them time to appreciate their own lives a little more.

You can also be really creative and inspiring by doing something unique with your friends such as a special girl’s trip or a sled riding extravaganza, complete with hot cocoa, to get everyone in the holiday spirit.   Or make a date to take all your girlfriends to coffee and a movie or to sing karaoke for a night of laughs and relaxation.  You could also look at the interests that bind you and your friends together and create a unique gift around that, such as a book or film club or walking group.  Even better, sign everyone up for a dance or exercise class (or buy the first class or Intro session for everyone).  Or if you have a special talent that your friends covet, set up a monthly or bi-monthly time to teach it to them, individually or as a group – you could teach knitting or crochet, pottery making, baking or even something active like swimming or surfing.

Giving is so much more fun than receiving, (well, okay, maybe not more fun, but it’s as good as) especially when you take the time to make gift giving a ritual, rather than an obligation or duty.  Let go of that feeling of panic we get during the holiday chaos.  Try our "Body Conscious" exercise this month and breathe, surrender time-pressured thoughts, and know that this year of gift-giving is an inspiring journey that you can relax into and enjoy.  Turn giving into an art form, something to luxuriate in as you find a gift that will truly elevate a person you really care about, inspire them beyond their daily routine and touch them.  May the 'S’ be with you.

Breath is the nectar of life. Simple as that. Without breath there is no life, there is no movement. Breathing is something we do without thought or effort every single minute of our lives. Yet stopping amidst the busy holiday chaos and taking a few minutes to really slow down and indulge in your breath can make all the difference in your day. Take five minutes, stop everything, turn off the phone and noise factor in your environment (if you can) and draw some deep, cleansing breaths into your body. You can do this wherever you are, even if you are right smack in the middle of shopping. You can escape to your car, a park bench… even in your office at your desk. Sit down and close your eyes. Take a long, luxurious breath, inhale as deeply as you can all the way into your pelvis and on down into your toes and then exhale with an open-mouthed release, letting go of all the stress, tension and tightness in your body. Try it right this very second. Take the time, make the time… demand five minutes to center yourself. If you have the privacy, let your next slow breath pull your chest forward, face up toward the sky in a gorgeous, forward spine stretch. On the exhale, follow your body, scoop your belly and reach your spine toward the wall behind you for another yummy stretch. Continue this breath and body wave for a few more moments and then carry on with your day. Feel the oxygen flowing into your blood stream and the clearheaded high you will have and let your ‘S’ smile creep onto your face. Have a delicious holiday!

What can we do this year that will blow our friends' minds? After shopping parties and candle shows… spice up yours and your girlfriends’ season by throwing a fun and innovative get-together: an S Factor style Christmas Lapdance party! You will get to share a whole new side of yourself with your girls, while arming them with a ‘gift’ they can also give if they so choose. If you are taking the ‘S’ or have the S Factor DVD 2: Intermediate with Lap Dance and the book, The S Factor: Strip Workouts for Every Woman (if not, click here to purchase) then you are well-equipped to show your girlfriends a good time that they can likewise share with their friends or lover. Set a date and time to have your girls over, stock up on some fun libations like Christmas punch, mulled wine (also known as “glogg”) or maybe even a little eggnog, something that will get you feeling pampered. Most importantly, make sure you have an armchair. Then pop in the DVD and warm your lovely self up with 15 minutes of the workout, involving some slow sensual stretches to make sure everyone’s muscles are ready.

Fast forward to the lapdance lesson with Miss Barbara D. and the magnetic Teri Jaworski, as they show you some powerful tools for tease while yours truly talks ’em through it! It will be a great way to turn other women on to the ‘S’ in a comfortable, non-intimidating environment and all will have an absolute blast – it will be a fun bonding experience that everyone will remember for years to come.

Sujata Ray
S Factor Instructor

Sujata Ray is an inspiring S Factor instructor, with a diverse background and experiences to share with her students.  Born and raised in Greensburg, Pennsylvania, she attended the same high school Sheila Kelley attended, Hempfield Senior High.  Both of her parents immigrated from India, where Sujata spent her summers growing up.  Though she speaks fluent English, her first language is Bengali, which is touted as the “sweetest sounding Indian dialect.”  Spending time in India significantly shaped her view of the female culture in developing nations, making her truly appreciate the freedom and place in society we enjoy as women in the United States.

Sujata moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in acting and writing after receiving her Bachelor of Science in Systems and Control Engineering from Case Western Reserve University.  Her dance background includes the study of Bharatnatyam (Indian classical dance) for 10 years and Modern Dance during college.   She was also involved in performance while in high school, participating in musicals where she sang, danced and acted, her three foremost passions.  However, it was during a year of study abroad in Sydney, Australia that she truly realized the extent of her penchant for acting.  As one of the few Indian actresses in Sydney, Sujata was cast in many productions and enjoyed it immensely, prompting her move to Los Angeles after graduation.

Since moving to Los Angeles, Sujata found herself missing dance very much and was in search of some type of movement.  She considered ballet and tap, but truly wanted something more unique to help get her in shape and provide an outlet for expression. Sujata had lived in Los Angeles for almost a year when her former high school principal suggested she look up fellow alumni Sheila Kelley for some advice regarding her acting career.  After speaking with Sheila and learning about S Factor, Sujata immediately knew that she had found what she was looking for.  She fell in love after only one class.  “S Factor opened me up sensually and awakened my dormant sexual energy,” she says.  “It helped me get in touch with myself and my acting, and made me more confident moving though the world in normal everyday activity.

Sujata liked what the S Factor did for her so much that she decided to lead other women on a similar journey of awakening and help get them more in touch with their sexual selves.  Her academic experience in a male-dominated industry (her college had a male to female ratio of 7:3!) inspired her to help other women find a sense of power.  “Teaching S Factor allows me to help women cultivate a sense of power and discover that they can do anything they put their minds to,” she says. “Whether we want to work for NASA or hang upside down in a Snake, we can do whatever we put our minds to.”  She loves to watch her students grow and open up, and see the smiles on their faces and the excitement that they’re feeling during class.

Sujata lives in Studio City and teaches at both the Los Angeles and Encino locations.  In addition to teaching S Factor classes, Sujata is a commercial, film and TV actress who has worked on television shows including Buffy the Vampire Slayer, 7th Heaven, The Loop and Campus Ladies, as well as in independent films and commercials.  In her spare time, she loves to write screenplays and short stories and music.

Dear Sheila,

It is early Tuesday morning; "the day of the burn."  My
S Factor class is on Sunday so, Tuesday has become the day my muscles burn from the new moves my awesome instructor sneaks in every week now.  I LOVE the feeling; it lets me know I am building strength and using muscles I didn't realize existed.

I am a 41 year old mother of two incredible teenage boys and currently a Level 3 student.  Sundays used to be a day to catch up on sleep. It's now become
S Factor day for me and I wake up for it at 7:30 A.M.   I drive an hour each way to take class since San Francisco is the closest studio to me. Thank God I have one in driving distance; I am one of the lucky ones.

About 6 months ago, I heard you on a local morning radio program talking about S Factor and how it started inside of you and grew to fruition.  I was absolutely mesmerized by your passion and the words you used to describe what S Factor is about.  "A movement, freedom, safety, empowering, organic etc.."  I listened as you explained what it is now and what your hopes for it's future are and I had no choice but to explore it for myself.  I felt such a "pull" towards S Factor that it's difficult to explain without sounding strange.  I just knew that it was something I needed to be a part of.  In fact, when I first walked in the doors I told one of the girls (Erika) that I had this gut intuition that I needed to be there and she said "Welcome to the place where that's how all decisions are made."  I feel so fortunate that my first introduction was hearing it from you yourself because one tends to equate pole dancing with well...pole dancing and this was CLEARLY something different; something more.  The moment I had a chance I logged on to the S Factor web site and subscribed to your newsletter.  What a jewel that has been for me.  Those letters are so intuitive and inspiring; I save every one and forward them to my friends and family.  Shortly thereafter, I signed up for an Intro session and was hooked.  I have to say I was a bit nervous and apprehensive going into it. It had been over 2 years since I'd worked out at all and I'd gained 20 lbs after getting married 2 1/2 years earlier, which seems to be a hazard of a happy marriage!   After signing up for my first session, I was so impressed at how well thought out the entire S Factor experience is.  No mirrors, no men, no nudity, AMAZING instructors (shout out to Shannon here),  the perfect place to feel comfortable with all of it....it was more than I could have hoped for.  The studio itself is bursting with the most beautiful energy.  All of the women come for different reasons but I believe we stay for the same;  the one common denominator..........we are all female and what a thing to celebrate!   I've never had a place away from home where I can be completely myself at all times.  When I'm meditating, doing the workout, dancing or practicing pole tricks I don't have to look in a mirror or someone else's gaze to track my progress.  If I can't make it upside down one week, I don't feel self-conscious whatsoever! On the contrary, I feel supported, free to laugh out loud at myself, free from judgment and, most of all, safe.  A couple of weeks ago, as I was reading your "Italy story", it struck me how there truly is no place other than S Factor where we are 100% free as women to be women.  What an incredible beautiful gift you have created for us.

For some reason, since joining S Factor everything in my life that is important to me has become magnified in a way that has made me want to do it all better.
S Factor has brought out something inside of me that I forgot was there and is blossoming and changing all aspects of my life for the best.  I have been exploring new career fields (it is so time for a change), working out and losing weight (yay!), spending more time with my family etc. Listening to music has even become a different event. I have always loved music but it all has brand new meaning now.  It's like I have these rainbow glasses on and I'm never taking them off!  I know all of the S Factor women know exactly what I'm talking about when I say that the music, the dancing, the fitness, the pole tricks are all just icing on the cake.  I hope so many women everywhere  that are afraid or skeptical for one reason or another has a chance to hear you explain it because S Factor is different from anything they'll ever experience or have the opportunity to be a part of.  I often feel frustrated when I start to explain and get that "Oh, the pole dancing thing" response.  I want to shout it from the rooftops to any woman who will listen because every woman should have a place in their life like this.  It is the best feeling to be able to walk through the doors and leave the past week outside.  I love that we are encouraged to let it all go and, no matter what is hanging on my mind or in my heart, I am able to quiet it for those precious two hours every Sunday and rejuvenate my soul.  That is exactly what it does for me. S Factor is a place of courage and strength, a place of beauty, light and enlightenment.  It is filled with the most incredible women of all different ages and strengths. I met you at an open house in S.F. over the Summer and told you I wished I could live there at the studio. You replied "me too" and I thought you were being polite, but now I believe you meant it.  I get to live at the S Factor for two hours every week and I feel so fortunate for that opportunity.   I hope someday there will be an S Factor in driving or walking distance to every woman on every continent!

Thank you for following your gut instinct and continuing to fight for us.

Always an S Factor devotee,

Denise Stiarwalt

P.S. My gut now tells me that you have built such a force of love and beauty in the women of S Factor that, as a group, we are capable of great things to come.  I asked Erika (she'll probably tell you I'm a little crazy) if there was any charity work happening yet and she told me that Shawna had been talking about that before she left on maternity leave.  That is so exciting to me!  It's actually something I felt was going to happen in a big way with S Factor on that very day I heard you on the radio.  I know that sounds totally weird, but it's just what I felt and I still feel it very strongly. I truly believe this is just the tip of the iceberg for S Factor!
