The S Factor

An 'S' girl is Dancing with The Stars
One of our long-time S Factor students, the gorgeous, uber talented Lisa Rinna, is competing on Dancing With The Stars.

The show’s addicting and I know you all love dance (smile), so I bet a lot of you are already watching it. We hope you caught the segment where Sheila Kelley helped Lisa prepare for the competition, using the good old ‘S’ – it was a phenomenal experience and we are so thrilled to have been a part of it. Well, Lisa is doing really well in the competition and we all want her to continue on, so please watch Lisa’s fabulous performance and vote for her! She has been a critical force in helping us to spread the ‘S’, so it’s our turn to support her now. Don’t forget, ladies, it airs Thursday night on ABC – it’s time to represent!

Sheila Kelley's
S Factor Parties
Led by one of our phenomenal instructors, S Factor parties are a fun, creative way to celebrate one of the important ladies in your life! Our parties provide a unique, unforgettable experience for birthday girls, bride-to-bes and groups of women looking for an exciting way to bond. The two-hour party is designed with fun in mind, yet still provides the gentle, rigorous workout the S Factor is famous for. The first part of the party consists of a simple warm-up that takes students through all the S Factor movements and positions that are learned in our regular classes. Depending on the size of the party, all will learn the beginning of the lap dance routine and a pole trick or two. The best part is, the birthday girl or bachelorette (or whoever the woman of the hour is) will learn a full-on lap dance routine that she will perform for her cheering, adoring friends! Talk about putting a different spin on things - watching her whirl around the pole will be something all will remember! Ladies can come to the 'S', get all fired up, don festive gear and wear some scintillating stilettos! Please note that no food or drink is allowed and, due to safety regulations, absolutely no alcoholic beverages should be consumed before or during the party. For further information, call Amy at 323.965.9685.

MOVIE CORNER
Saturday Night Fever
Starring John Travolta

Talk about inspiration – there’s nothing like watching the snake-hipped Travolta let loose to “You Should Be Dancing.” Shot in New York and directed with gritty realism by John Badham, Saturday Night Fever leads us through Tony’s story as his life is changed by his passion for dance. Disco was ushered in by this movie and its soundtrack, led by the Bee Gees with some of the greatest disco songs ever made, including "Stayin' Alive", "Disco Inferno", and "Night Fever." Saturday Night Fever's soundtrack is still going strong, with continuous appearances throughout contemporary music. Great girlfriend film for a fun weekend romp with some popcorn and a nice cold Corona. I’ll be in New York, snake hipping my way through Chelsea!

The Mother of All Super Bowls
I was visiting my mom and dad just outside of Pittsburgh a couple of weeks back. On the way to their house from the airport, I stopped off at the local Italian deli to get food. There was obviously some kind of football playoff game that day because the store was packed with men and boys in Steelers jerseys buying lunch meats and cheese and bread for the football watching party that was about to begin. I was just fascinated. Not knowing that this was the game that would determine if they were going to make it to THE Super Bowl, I watched in absolute awe. They had on shirts and jackets and pants and hats that were all gold and black (the team colors) and jerseys that had the number and name of their favorite players on them. Their intense 'anticipation' pheromones permeated the store. It was as if every cell in their body was chanting, "Something's going to happen, something's going to happen!" It was a bit intoxicating, I must say. I wanted to be a part of that "Something's going to happen" fervor but I wasn't. Sadly enough, I couldn't care less about the sport. It's not like I haven't tried. I did see the Steelers rehearsing at their summer training camp while I was visiting. I know, I know, it's not called "rehearsing" - it's practice, but I gotta have a little fun with it. After all, it's not a religion, is it?! Although, I did grow up in the Franco Harris - Terry Bradshaw - Lynn Swann era of Steelers greatness, so there was a lot of inundation and attempted induction into fandom which I adeptly succeeded avoiding, wily creature that I am.

This football thing fascinates me, I mean….what gives? Think about it. Just the shape of the ball, for God's sake! What is that about? Sure, sure, I get that it's kind of like a primitive battle or a great chess match, and the players are warriors and all, but I think it goes even deeper than that. I think that the guys sitting on the couch watching it in their living rooms are living vicariously through the players and they themselves feel like the warriors. I think watching football helps men feel a little more male, a little more powerful, a little more tribal. It's kind of magnificent when you look at it that way.

And here's a really odd thing, I don't quite trust a man who doesn't watch football occasionally - at least the Super Bowl. I'm not sure why. It might have something to do with embracing this primitive male bonding ritual. As much as I don't get it, I will go to a football game with my guy. I like to watch him get all puffed up and intense. He grips the back of the seat in front of him or he screams some primal gibberish at the players as if they can hear him. (It's probably some ancient male/speak handed down through the collective unconscious - yes, I've read Jung.) It makes me smile. Not patronizingly, like I've got something on him but, well, proudly. He's this male creature who's being so insanely male and it's kind of honorable.

As much as I love watching him, surrounded by all of this maleness at a football game, it reminds me that I gotta get my femme time in. I am so very happy to have a specifically female space and community like S Factor in my life. It makes me grateful for all of you out there who have a like-minded desire to be unapologetically female, not just in the way we move, but in our mind sets and lifestyles. To be able to travel the world and know that somewhere you're going to run into another one of us S girls, maybe at a masquerade ball in Venice, Italy, or in the Alps skiing, or walking the Great Wall in China. Wherever you go, there will be more and more of us emerging. We're the ones with the perpetual smile like Mona Lisa hiding an ancient secret. We're the ones with the bare feet and two little ones in the park on a rainy day. We're the ones splashing in the fountain in Washington Square Park in the middle of Winter. We're the ones traveling to Mexico with a new lover trying to figure out how you got to Burning Man in the first place. We're the ones working at the paper in Des Moines, Iowa and skewing the article with a female point of view. We're the ones lecturing in a college in Seattle about fairness and lifelong dreams and how you should never let them go. We're the ones curled in the corner of a coffee shop on a real comfy armchair reading some wonderfully trashy novel or Stephen Hawking's "A Brief History of Time." We're the ones driving through snow to hold the hand of those we hold most dear. We're the ones with the laughter that you can hear down the block, resonating off of the buildings. We're the ones walking in the S Factor's loading dock door in LA, or our quaint entrance on Filbert street in San Fran, or slipping around to the back of the Plaza del Oro in Encino or coming straight out of the A train on 23rd and 6th for a weekly touch of the kick-all feminine… with a capital 'F'.

If we can lift the males in our lives to a place of greatness and grandeur, we can most certainly lift ourselves to those heights, too. If we can herald and appreciate their insanely specific qualities then we can let ours shine even brighter. So let the men in your life have their Super Bowl once a year. We can experience the mother of all Super Bowls every day, with a capital "S."

All my love and respect,

Sheila

Love Coupons
It’s always fun to be original when Valentine’s Day rolls around. A little creativity goes a long way in showing your love and can result in some of the most memorable gifts of all. Remember, this is a day when we should give ourselves some extra self-loving as well! Especially if you’re single – this is the perfect time to do a little something special for yourselves. Either way, how about a present that keeps on giving all year long? One of my favorite things to give (and get) are Love Coupons. They don’t need to be fancy – you can make them by hand, on your computer, with crayons…. whatever you want! They can be made into a book or dropped into a jar, hidden in a purse or briefcase, lunchbox… the possibilities are endless! The coupons can be as racy (or not) as you want – simply whatever you feel most comfortable with. Some fun ideas for coupons for the love of your life include:

• A night of candlelight, bubble bath, and one wet and willing partner.
• One erotic, full body massage. Massage Oils included.
• Breakfast in bed.
• A romantic night of champagne, strawberries and an old movie.
• A weekend free of chores and responsibilities! The coupon-giver will perform all of your chores for one weekend (well and without complaint).
• Try something new together (recipient’s choice).
• Fantasy fulfillment night. Recipient gets to make his/her fantasy come true.
• A night of stargazing on a picnic blanket with a fine bottle of red wine and a divine cheese platter.
• Last but not least… an S Factor striptease and lap dance!

Now, the idea behind writing out some coupons for yourself is a way to be a little decadent and indulgent with yourself… guilt-free. Ideas for self-love coupons include:

• A rainy day spent in bed DOING NOTHING.
• A manicure and pedicure at the spa.
• A full body massage or beauty service at a spa.
• One huge hot fudge sundae – NO GUILT ALLOWED.
• One maid service.
• Sleep in late coupon.
• A relaxing bubble bath.
• A $500 shopping spree!

A fresh, glossy pedicure just in time for V-day!
There’s nothing like having a fresh pedicure… even in the cold of winter when you’re stuck in boots and closed-toe shoes. It’s an ideal way to pamper yourself and can be done in the luxury of your own home, without spending a fortune. For an extra blissful experience, pop in a relaxing CD, dim the lights and fire up some candles around the room.
All you need are cotton balls, polish remover, an emery board, nail trimmer, pumice stone and a couple of paper towels. You can get some toe separators if you want, but cotton balls do the same trick. Start by removing the polish on all of your toes before soaking away your stress in a tub or foot bath. Drop in your favorite bath salts to soften up dry skin and add a tablespoon of olive oil to moisturize. Massage a nice exfoliating scrub on the bottoms of your feet and leave it on for a few minutes while you relax. When you’re ready, banish dead skin and calluses with a pumice stone. When you’re done soaking your feet, rinse off and trim your nails and cuticles. Toenails should be trimmed straight across and make sure to avoid cutting them too short – doing so increases the chance of developing ingrown toenails.
You should be feeling soooo indulged at this point, but it only gets better. Now moisturize your feet with a rich, invigorating lotion or cream and massage them slowly in long upward strokes, from your toes to your knees. Before applying polish, make sure to remove any excess lotion. Finally, in honor of Valentine’s day, paint your toes a bright and beautiful red, even if you’re the only one who sees them. Polish them in layers, allowing them to dry between coats. Start with a base coat, add two coats of a hot red shade, and then finish with a glossy top coat. Just knowing those little babies are a saucy red will add a spring in your step – it’s your own special Valentine’s day secret, just for you!

In the News
We had some fabulous media coverage in January, and have some more fun things lined up this month! On January 27th, 20/20 ran an amazing piece on "Hot Mamas - The Changing Face of Motherhood", which included a 5-minute segment featuring Sheila Kelley, the S Factor workout and some of the special mothers who are our teachers and classmates. We hope you were able to catch it! Sheila also did a radio interview on the Ryan Seacrest Show, which was a blast, as well as an awesome piece on E! Entertainment's "The Awful Truth With Ted Casablanca".

This month, look out for us on the new UPN show, "Get This Party Started!", hosted by the star of MTV's Laguna Beach, Kristin Cavallari. Two of our amazing S Factor instructors, Kristina Lloyd and Barbara Dial, took a lucky bride-to-be and 20 or so of her favorite friends through the S Factor workout and some beginning pole tricks, making it the bachelorette party of the year! The show begins airing February 7th, 2006 so look for episode #5, featuring the 'S', towards late February or early March.

Love Letter from an S Girl
Check out this letter from our lovely S Factor student, Shannon Kibby.

Dear Sheila,

Good Day to you. Thank you for being so open with women. The constant primal human contact with your students is uniquely Sheila.

Now that the oozzie oozzie, squish squish is out of the way. When pulling up in front of the L.A., that building is so big and class is so cozy –all bearings were lost. I went in and devoured my irresistible accent to my family vacation. I know one day all the hot spots will be getting’ their curve on. When do you open in Asia? I want to go to N.Y. but I have to convince my man that N.Y. is the place to be on V-Day. I felt so welcome and loved at the L.A. S Factor – it was like going home to the mother ship. I bought a S hat! I want a black and white one. Who am I kidding? I NEED like eight BLACK & WHITE baseball caps. HINT HINT.

Someone complimented me on my walk and, believe me, they did not take another step without your card. This was in a line at the airport. Sometimes it shocks me that it is still sooo fun to share knowledge of where to obtain this movement. I meet all kinds of wonderful people now that I have the S-breaker. I love it when people ask about my S appeal. I get to talk about how us girls are like a social club, with a studio flair, and a splash of self empowerment, mixed with good old family love.

By the way I must say...my prayers are with our Mommies. My Mom's Human Machine needs major repair. It's all God. Now I'm all churchie whurchie, mush, mush. It’s time for me to go to bed.

Peace and Love to You,

Shannon Kibby
